Art by Post offers original hand-painted Clarice Cliff Crocus 'Autumn' flower pattern Cups, Saucers and Plates, first produced in 1928. These highly collectable Art Deco ceramics were designed by Clarice Cliff and produced in Hanley, Staffordshire. They were sold in the Crocus Shop below the Bizarre shop. Painted freehand, the crocus flowers with thin green leaves were first produced in a number of colour variations:
Autumn - Flowers in orange, blue & purple in 1928. Blue - Flowers in shades of blue in 1935. Purple - Flowers in shades of purple, also in 1935. Spring - Flowers in pink, yellow & blue in 1933. Summer - Flowers on a Summer glaze in 1934. Sungleam - Flowers in orange & yellow in 1931.
The business grew and at its height employed 20 girls hand-painting the crocuses and leaves. Famous among the artists was Ethel 'Crocus' Barrow painting the crocuses almost continually from 1928 to 1964!
