'Harbour Sunset' depicts the three masted wooden topsail schooner 'Jane Banks' previously known as the 'Frau Minna Petersen'. This is the second painting of the 'Jane Banks' in the Harbour Series. She can be seen in a similar view in Harbour Arrival*. " 'Arrival' was painted on a small canvas and I did not feel that a vessel of such fine lines could best be featured and enjoyed on this scale, hence the larger canvas."
She was built at Porthmadog, North Wales, in 1878. Yellow metalled as an ocean going vessel, she was initially constructed for the dried salted cod cargoes from New Foundland. She made her first crossing from Porthmadog in 1879.
Seen in the painting at anchor off West Bay, Bridport, Dorset, drying a sail. She was not recorded at West Bay but regularly in West Country waters in the 1920's and 30's.
