'Harbour Warping' depicts the 'Marie, a small wooden 33ton smack being warped out of West Bay harbour, Bridport, Dorset by the harbour staff. Most craft in this era of the 1920's and 1930's did not have a fitted engine. Entering and leaving a small port such as West Bay required great skill on the part of crew and harbour staff.
The 'Marie' was built by W.Date of Kingsbridge, Devon in 1904. Official no. 86475. Her home registered port was Salcombe, Devon. She was owned for most of her working life by Alfred E.Tope of Plympton, Devon. According to harbour records held in the Bridport Museum archive, Alfred Tope brought her into West Bay harbour seventeen times from 1932-1937. Most visits by her were to enter the port light to load gravel for the building trade in Plymouth.
'Marie' ended up a Torridge hulk, rotting on the mud at Bideford, Devon, near to the present berth of the now restored three masted schooner 'Kathleen and May'.
