Born in Lynton, North Devon in 1948, Roberts spent his early years growing up in the small town of Topsham, south of Exeter. Topsham on the river Exe was once a busy commercial port with ship building in the days of sail. Tospham supplied three warships to fight the Spanish Armada. Robert left school to work in horticulture for five years, but his main focus was playing tenor sax in several Exeter groups. The 1960/70's souls sounds featured in a very busy music scene in the West Country and Exeter area. One band Robert played in, was lucky to provide support act to bands like The Who, The Bee Gees and Manfred Man. In 1976 he was playing with a six piece Exeter band, 'Pride' and they won the ITV's New Faces talent show, playing at that time to over twenty million viewers. Oil painting started part-time in 1977 and after moving to Somerset Robert decided the only way to hone his craft was to concentrate on full time painting to build up a volume of work to a high enough standard to publish. Like many artists he is always looking for material to compose the next painting. Through a friend in Weymouth, who runs a maritime book shop, Robert has been able to buy a large collection of old black and white negatives, containing sailing vessels, taken in the 1920s - 1930s, sails final swansong before World War Two. Looking up old harbour records to pinpoint the dates of some in the collection will help Robert compile a book on West Bay harbour, Bridport, Dorset. The book will cover some of the artwork produced by him with photographs of the period. The paintings produced today by Robert have steadily developed over the last thirty years, and like many artists he looks forward to many new challenges and commissions in his chosen field.
